Jenny & Leo’s Engagement

I met Jenny and Leo for the first time when we came together at the Ferry Building to do their engagement shoot. Daylight savings time had snuck up on us so we ended up with an hour less daylight than we thought we’d have. But that turned into a great opportunity play around Market Street and the Embarcadero after the sun set. My favorite shot ended up being the silhouette that we shot in the window at the very end. Also, its easy to forget that people still take the Ferry across the Bay, and we found some great little alcoves down by the Ferry (albeit a little smelly). Jenny and Leo were great sports though, and we had fun working together for a final product which everbody is excited about. Thanks guys!

Off to China Bridal Shoot

We had a great afternoon doing a little photoshoot for this bride and groom. They will be married later this year in China, but since their relationship began and grew in San Francisco they wanted some pictures in the city. We spent some time at City Hall and then headed outside for a few more shots before a couple shots in Nob Hill. I love the leading lines and reflections available in the city hall architecture. It was also nice to be there later in the afternoon in order to sidestep some of the usual hustle and bustle. Her mom also hand made the beautiful wedding dress!

Social Media Relationships: Matt Singley & Alcatraz

A few weeks ago I had the chance to work with Matt Singley to do a family documentary session for his daytrip with his kids to Alcatraz. He solicited photographers on his blog and ultimately chose me to do the shoot. Matt is something of a social media guru, whose blog and twitter feed are followed by thousands. If you are wondering what social media is check out this useful wikipedia article. Ultimately Matt helps businesses utilize the relational aspect of the web to promote their values and develop relationships with clients and potential clients. Twitter, myspace, and individual blogs become a free forum for people and their companies to interact with real people. Matt wrote an excellent synopsis of the potential of social media to develop into real life symbiotic relationships on his blog using our photoshoot as an example.  I saw the project as a sort of concept album, taking a family event and documenting it. I love kids and love taking pictures. This combo allowed me the chance to celebrate his family and their relationships. Great afternoon. Thanks guys!

Academy of Sciences

When my mom was in town a few weeks ago we had the chance to check out the current Richard Avedon and Ansel Adams exhibits at the SFMOMA. Avedon’s use of edgy lighting and the ability to capture the essence of a person’s character is well juxtaposed with Adams’ timeless California prints. I’ve yet to discover another photographer who can print an image of a rock to inspire like Adams does. Wandering these exhibits makes me re-fall in love with photography like reading Steinbeck tends to put me back in front of the keyboard to pound some more out on the book I’m writing.

We also headed over to the California Academy of Sciences to be dazzled by the fishies and the [butter]flies. Kickin. Although the fish were behind glass the pictures still speak for themselves.
